Tsavo East Safari and Diani Beach Escape

Overview

The Tsavo East Safari and Diani Beach Escape is the most satisfying Kenya safari and beach combination available at this price point, seamlessly joining two of the most outstanding destinations in the country within a single five day itinerary. Tsavo East National Park is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the most evocative, a vast red dust savanna bisected by the palm fringed Galana River and famous for the iconic red elephants whose distinctive colouration comes from rolling in the iron rich volcanic soil. The park is raw and elemental compared to the more manicured reserves in southern Kenya, with a frontier wilderness quality that rewards patient observers with exceptional lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, buffalo and elephant sightings. Mudanda Rock rising 1.5 kilometres above the surrounding plain creates a natural dam that concentrates wildlife during the dry season, producing some of the most reliable and spectacular elephant aggregations in Africa. From the dust red plains of Tsavo East the safari transitions to the luminous tropical world of Diani Beach on the south Kenya coast, a 17 kilometre stretch of coral white sand fronting the turquoise and azure waters of the Indian Ocean. The offshore reef protects the beach from ocean swell, creating a warm shallow lagoon ideal for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking, while the ancient coastal forest behind the beach shelters the endangered Angola colobus monkey and diverse forest birdlife.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Nairobi to Tsavo East National Park
Departing Nairobi by road southeast along the Nairobi to Mombasa highway, your route enters the immense red plains of Tsavo East through the Voi Gate approximately four hours from the capital. The afternoon game drive covers the Voi River circuit and the famous Aruba Dam where enormous crocodiles bask on the muddy banks and elephant herds arrive to drink in the late afternoon heat. The immediate impression of Tsavo East is one of scale and wildness, a red dust savanna stretching to every horizon with acacia thorn trees catching the last light of the afternoon sun.
Road transfer from Nairobi, Voi Gate entry, Aruba Dam game drive, crocodile and elephant at the dam, Voi River circuit, red plains sunset
Lunch and Dinner
Day 2
Full Day Tsavo East Including Mudanda Rock
A dawn departure from camp positions you for the extraordinary spectacle of Mudanda Rock at sunrise, a 1.5 kilometre inselberg of syenite rock rising dramatically above the plain that acts as a natural water catchment. The pool below Mudanda Rock during the dry months attracts hundreds of elephants simultaneously, creating one of the greatest elephant gatherings in Africa, together with enormous herds of buffalo, zebra, lesser kudu and kongoni. The Galana River in the northern section of the park is the most productive zone for predator sightings, with lion resting in the riverine forest and leopard spotted in the thick vegetation along the banks.
Mudanda Rock sunrise elephant gathering, Galana River game drive, lion and leopard tracking, red elephant photography, Crocodile Point on the Galana River, afternoon plains circuit

Day 3
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
After a final morning game drive your vehicle departs Tsavo East heading southeast through Voi town and then south along the coast road to Diani Beach. The journey takes approximately three to four hours with a coastal lunch stop en route. On arrival at Diani the transition from the red dust wilderness to the turquoise lagoon and powdery white sand is one of the most dramatic sensory contrasts in all of travel. The afternoon is entirely at leisure for swimming, snorkelling on the offshore reef, and a sunset dhow cruise along the coast.

Day 4
Full Day Diani Beach Leisure and Ocean Activities
A full day at Diani is best spent exploring the wealth of ocean and beach activities available on the south Kenya coast. The offshore coral reef at Diani is part of the Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park and a guided snorkelling or diving excursion reveals an underwater world of extraordinary colour and diversity including sea turtles, reef sharks, parrotfish, octopus and abundant coral formations. The coastal forest behind the beach is home to the Colobus Conservation project and a guided forest walk offers close encounters with the magnificent black and white Angola colobus monkeys.
