Northern Kenya Wilderness Safari

Overview

The Northern Kenya Wilderness Safari is designed for the discerning traveller who wishes to explore the vast and largely undiscovered wilderness of Kenya north of the equator, a landscape of extraordinary ecological diversity and wildlife richness that remains far less visited than the southern parks. This six day itinerary visits three of northern Kenyas premier destinations in a single seamless journey that begins in the red dust semi arid country of Samburu, continues through the wild forested wilderness of Meru National Park and concludes on the elevated grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau. Samburu National Reserve is the iconic northern Kenya destination, internationally celebrated for the five uniquely northern wildlife species that define the ecosystem. Meru National Park, made famous worldwide by Joy and George Adamsons lioness Elsa in the book and film Born Free, is one of the least visited and most biodiverse national parks in Kenya, traversed by fourteen permanent rivers and supporting an exceptional density of wildlife across its varied terrain from open grassland to dense riverine forest. Laikipia Plateau in the final section of the journey presents the most evolved model of wildlife conservation in East Africa, where private landowners and community groups have created a wildlife corridor that sustains populations of African wild dog, black rhino, elephant and cheetah across a network of connected conservancies.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
A scenic morning flight north from Nairobi over the equatorial highlands and Mount Kenya to Samburu airstrip begins this northern Kenya adventure. The semi arid landscape below the aircraft becomes progressively more dramatic as the green central highlands give way to the red acacia scrub of the Northern Frontier District. An afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River introduces the first of the Special Five species in a landscape of immense beauty and solitude.

The afternoon extends into Buffalo Springs National Reserve where the landscape changes to denser riverine vegetation and additional species including Grevy zebra and Beisa oryx favour the open grassland areas.
