Samburu and Ol Pejeta Northern Kenya Safari

Overview

The Samburu and Ol Pejeta Northern Kenya Safari is designed for discerning travellers seeking a safari experience beyond the conventional circuit, exploring the remote and spectacularly beautiful wilderness of northern Kenya alongside one of Africas most important conservation achievements. Samburu National Reserve in the Northern Frontier District is famed for the Special Five species that are either exclusive to northern Kenya or exceptionally rare elsewhere in the country. The reticulated giraffe with its large bold geometric markings is the most visually striking, the Grevy zebra with its narrow pencil stripe pattern is the largest wild equid on earth, the gerenuk stands permanently on its hind legs to browse from the tips of acacia trees, the Beisa oryx with its dramatic straight horns is a creature of extraordinary grace, and the Somali ostrich displays brilliant blue neck colouration in the breeding season. The Ewaso Nyiro River running through the reserve creates a permanent wildlife corridor that concentrates lion, leopard, elephant and crocodile along its banks. Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau provides a very different but equally extraordinary experience. This is East Africas most successful conservancy, home to over 100 black rhinos, a thriving cheetah population, African wild dog and the global conservation focal point of Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos remaining on earth. A dedicated ranger accompanies all northern white rhino visits and provides a deeply moving and important briefing on the conservation crisis facing this subspecies.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
The journey to Samburu begins with a scenic morning flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport north across Mount Kenya and the equatorial highlands to Samburu airstrip, a journey of approximately one hour. As the aircraft descends towards the reserve the dramatic transition from green highland to semi arid acacia scrub is clearly visible from the air. Your guide meets you at the airstrip for an immediate afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River where elephant, crocodile, reticulated giraffe and the first of the Special Five await.

Lunch and Dinner
Day 2
Full Day Samburu Special Five Safari
An early morning departure takes full advantage of the cool northern Kenya dawn when predator activity is at its peak. Your guide will prioritise the Special Five encounters, positioning the vehicle for extended observations of reticulated giraffe, Grevy zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich in the magnificent semi arid landscape. Samburu is also outstanding for raptors, with Martial eagle, Bateleur and various vulture species regularly sighted, and the reserve consistently produces leopard sightings along the river banks. The afternoon drive extends into the Buffalo Springs National Reserve adjacent to Samburu for additional habitat variety.

Day 3
Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Departing Samburu by road your route crosses the Laikipia Plateau to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a journey of approximately three hours through the acacia woodland and smallholder farming country that borders the conservancy. Afternoon game drive within Ol Pejeta introduces the very different landscape of the highland plateau with its wide open grasslands, scattered fig trees and remarkable diversity of wildlife. The conservancy is superb for cheetah sightings, with a resident coalition of males that cover the open grasslands and are regularly spotted from a distance scanning for Thomson gazelle.

Day 4
Northern White Rhino and Conservation Day at Ol Pejeta
This is a day of profound conservation significance. A dedicated morning session with an Ol Pejeta ranger and conservancy guide introduces you to Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on earth. This is not simply a wildlife encounter but a deeply meaningful experience that contextualises the global conservation crisis and the extraordinary scientific and ethical efforts being made to prevent the extinction of this subspecies through assisted reproduction research. The afternoon is dedicated to black rhino tracking, wild dog search and a visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary where rescued chimpanzees from West and Central Africa are given a permanent safe home.
