Overview

This eight day expedition is designed for travelers who want to venture deep off the beaten path before visiting the famous savanna. You will begin in Meru National Park, a remote and brilliantly wild landscape famous as the setting for the Born Free lioness story. You will then move to the arid landscapes of Samburu to find the unique northern Special Five. Continuing south, you will visit the Ol Pejeta Conservancy to engage with intensive rhino conservation efforts. Finally, the journey brings you to the Maasai Mara for a classic finale of Big Five tracking across the open plains.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Nairobi to Meru National Park
You will depart Nairobi and drive towards the central highlands, continuing east to Meru National Park. This park is incredibly scenic with tall grasses, lush swamps, and winding rivers. You will arrive for lunch and enjoy a late afternoon game drive in this remote, uncrowded wilderness, looking for lions and large herds of buffalo.

Day 2
Full Day Exploring Meru National Park
You will spend a full day exploring the diverse habitats of Meru. You will visit the Adamson Falls and the grave of Elsa the lioness. The park features a dedicated rhino sanctuary where you have excellent chances of spotting both black and white rhinoceros in a pristine environment with very few other vehicles around.

Day 3
Meru to Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, you will drive north into the increasingly arid landscapes of Samburu National Reserve. You will arrive in time for lunch at your lodge along the Ewaso Nyiro River. In the late afternoon, you will head out for a game drive to seek out the unique northern wildlife species like the reticulated giraffe and gerenuk.

Day 4
Full Day Game Viewing in Samburu
You will spend the entire day exploring the Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves. You will trace the winding river, observing huge herds of elephants coming to drink. You will keep a keen eye out for leopards resting in the large acacia trees and track the Samburu Special Five.

Day 5
Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
After a morning game drive and breakfast, you will leave Samburu and drive south to the Laikipia Plateau, arriving at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. After lunch, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive in this incredible predator rich environment, visiting the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Day 6
Ol Pejeta to Maasai Mara National Reserve
Today involves a long but scenic drive or a scheduled flight transfer. You will leave the Mount Kenya region and travel across the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara. You will arrive in the late afternoon, just in time for an introductory evening game drive across the golden savanna.

Day 7
Full Day Safari Exploring the Maasai Mara
This entire day is dedicated to exploring the vast expanses of the Maasai Mara. You will carry a picnic lunch so you can maximize your time in the reserve. You will visit the Mara River to view hippos and crocodiles, and spend hours observing the complex interactions between predators and prey.

Day 8
Morning Safari and Return to Nairobi
Enjoy a final sunrise game drive in the Maasai Mara. After returning to camp for breakfast, you will check out and begin your journey back to Nairobi, concluding your comprehensive eight day expedition.
