Lake Naivasha

A beautiful freshwater Rift Valley lake surrounded by papyrus reed beds, yellow fever acacia woodland and flower farms, famous for hippos, over 400 bird species and the adjacent Hells Gate National Park.

About Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Nairobi at an altitude of 1,884 metres. The lake is edged by dense papyrus beds that shelter enormous hippo populations and provide nesting habitat for hundreds of water bird species. The surrounding woodland is home to large herds of giraffe, zebra, buffalo and various antelope. Hells Gate National Park adjacent to the lake offers one of Kenya only parks where walking and cycling among wildlife is permitted, with dramatic gorges and geothermal activity adding to the landscape.
The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, including papyrus swamps and acacia woodlands, creating a rich habitat for wildlife. It is particularly famous for its large population of hippos and diverse birdlife, with hundreds of bird species recorded in the area. Fish eagles are commonly seen and heard, adding to the natural charm of the lake.
Unlike many national parks, Lake Naivasha allows for close interaction with nature through activities such as boat rides, which provide opportunities to observe hippos and birds up close. Crescent Island, located within the lake, offers guided walking safaris where visitors can walk among grazing animals such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes in a safe environment.
The surrounding area also features other attractions including geothermal sites and nearby parks, making Lake Naivasha an excellent base for exploring the Rift Valley region.
Accommodation options around the lake range from luxury resorts and lodges to mid range hotels and campsites, catering to a wide range of travelers.
