About Lake Bogoria National Reserve

Lake Bogoria is a shallow alkaline lake in the floor of the Great Rift Valley in Baringo County, protected within the Lake Bogoria National Reserve. The lake is most famous for hosting concentrations of lesser flamingos that routinely number in the hundreds of thousands and occasionally exceed one million birds, coating the shoreline in an unbroken flamingo pink. The western shore of the lake is lined with dozens of hot springs and geysers that shoot boiling water several metres into the air, creating a surreal and dramatic backdrop to the flamingo gatherings.
The landscape is dramatic and unique, featuring steaming geysers, hot springs, and volcanic terrain that creates an otherworldly atmosphere. These geothermal features make Lake Bogoria one of the most geologically active and visually fascinating destinations in Kenya.
The reserve supports a variety of wildlife adapted to the semi arid environment. Common species include greater kudu, impala, buffalo, zebra, warthog, and baboons. Although large predators are less frequently seen, the area remains ecologically rich and important for biodiversity.
Lake Bogoria is especially renowned for its birdlife, particularly flamingos that gather in large numbers when conditions are favorable. The shimmering pink flocks along the shoreline create one of the most iconic natural spectacles in East Africa.
The surrounding landscape includes acacia woodlands, rocky hills, and escarpments that provide scenic viewpoints over the lake and geothermal fields.

Travel Guide and Logistics

Lake Bogoria National Reserve is located approximately two hundred sixty kilometers from Nairobi and is accessible by road through Nakuru or Marigat. The journey typically takes five to six hours depending on road conditions.
Visitors are advised to use suitable vehicles due to sections of rough terrain within the reserve. Accommodation is available in lodges and camps in nearby towns such as Marigat and within the surrounding region.

Hot and dry in the valley floor. Wind off the lake can be strong in the afternoons. Early morning visits provide the best flamingo and photography conditions.
