Laikipia Plateau

A vast highland plateau above the Rift Valley hosting a remarkable mosaic of private conservancies and community wildlife areas that together protect one of the highest densities of endangered wildlife in Kenya.

About Laikipia Plateau

The Laikipia Plateau north of Mount Kenya is one of Africas great conservation success stories. A network of private ranches, community conservancies and wildlife sanctuaries across over 9,000 square kilometres together host Kenyas second largest elephant population, healthy populations of African wild dog, striped hyena, reticulated giraffe and a significant proportion of the global endangered black rhino population. The plateau is characterised by rolling upland acacia scrub and grassland at altitudes of 1,700 to 2,400 metres, providing a cooler and more temperate safari experience than the lowland parks.
Laikipia Plateau is one of Kenya’s most unique and progressive wildlife conservation regions, located in central Kenya to the northwest of Mount Kenya. Unlike traditional national parks, Laikipia is made up of a network of private and community owned conservancies that work together to protect wildlife while supporting local livelihoods.
The region features a diverse landscape that includes open savannah, rolling hills, river valleys, and forested areas. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of wildlife species, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and endangered species such as black rhinoceroses and African wild dogs.
Laikipia is particularly known for its successful conservation model, where tourism revenue helps fund wildlife protection and community development. Visitors often experience more exclusive and less crowded safaris compared to larger national parks.
Activities in Laikipia go beyond traditional game drives. Visitors can enjoy guided walking safaris, horseback riding, camel trekking, and cultural visits with local communities such as the Maasai and Samburu people. The region offers a deeper and more immersive safari experience.
Accommodation in Laikipia ranges from high end luxury lodges to intimate tented camps, many of which are located in private conservancies offering personalized service and access to vast wilderness areas.

Travel Guide and Logistics

Laikipia Plateau is accessible by road from Nairobi, with travel times ranging between four to six hours depending on the specific conservancy. Domestic flights are available to several airstrips within the region, making it convenient for travelers seeking quicker access.
Due to the spread out nature of the conservancies, it is advisable to plan transport in advance. Many lodges provide airstrip transfers and guided activities within their conservancy areas.
