The island has gained international scientific fame as the site where palaeontologist Mary Leakey discovered the 18-million-year-old Proconsul skull, a critical early primate fossil, in 1948. The adjacent Mfangano Island is home to ancient Suba rock art paintings and is accessible by short boat transfer.
