Rusinga Island & Lake Victoria

Tranquil freshwater islands on Africa greatest lake offering boat safaris, sport fishing, Luo cultural immersion, and fossil sites where Mary Leakey discovered the 18-million-year-old Proconsul skull.

About Rusinga Island & Lake Victoria

Rusinga Island lies in the Kenyan portion of Lake Victoria, the largest tropical freshwater lake in the world and the source of the Nile. The island has gained international scientific fame as the site where palaeontologist Mary Leakey discovered the 18-million-year-old Proconsul skull, a critical early primate fossil, in 1948. Today the island offers a unique combination of fossil heritage, freshwater fishing safaris targeting Nile perch and tilapia, boat excursions across the lake, and deep immersion in Luo culture and community life. The adjacent Mfangano Island is home to ancient Suba rock art paintings and is accessible by short boat transfer. The landscape is lush, green, and dramatically different from Kenya's savannah destinations.
