Lamu Archipelago

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa, offering a car-free ancient stone town, pristine beaches, and a profoundly authentic coastal culture.

About Lamu Archipelago

Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town dates back to the 14th century and retains its original urban fabric of narrow coral stone streets, ornately carved wooden doors, and courtyards. There are no cars on Lamu Island. Donkeys and dhows remain the primary forms of transport. The archipelago encompasses several islands including Lamu, Manda, and Pate, each with its own character. Shela Beach on the southern tip of Lamu Island stretches for over 12 kilometres of pristine sand backed by rolling dunes. Dhow sailing and deep-sea fishing remain central to island life and tourism alike.
